It was second day at our new home. It was gusty, cold and dark night. There were some friends at our home in the evening. And one of them improperly closed the door to backyard from family room. This is one of the rooms which had an iffy lock. We all went to sleep. Since it was cold, we turned on our heating. Checked the locks of each of the doors to make sure everything in place. All was well. Slept under cozy environment provided by the heating system.
It was around 2am in the morning that I was almost suffocating due to the heat in my room. I woke up to see that air is damn dry and literally hot. My first impression was the thermostat for heating was set too high or it is not functioning properly. I went down to check the heat. Since we shut off the lights at night, it was a bit hard to see things when I went down. As soon as I flipped the light on, I saw the backdoor was ajar and there were sounds coming from the den. I almost froze not knowing what was going on. Did someone break into the house? Are they still there in the den. I looked around to see the TV is still there, the laptop is still on the couch. Didnt find anything thats missing. Well I was not wearing my glasses to know if they took something small. But what were the sounds from the den? I waited there to listen. There were constant ruffling sounds. May be they are rummaging through my new boxes or may be they was some kind of animal that came into the home. I looked around and saw the long stick that we got while moving. First thought was to take it and go after the whatever/whoever is in the den. But then what if they had a weapon. I quickly found my phone and made the bold decision to call 911. I promptly told them what happened, what I hear and what my concerns were. I didnt want to wake up Keerti as she will freak out. I was talking in low tone and yet Keerti woke up. She was afraid, of course. I tried to calm her, but in vain. Honestly I wanted her to be asleep so that I can handle the situation. If not she becomes part of situation. At every stage she wants to know what is going on, what the 911 people are saying etc. I frankly told her to stay calm and hold me for now and I will explain the details later. It took cops a good 20 mins to arrive at our home. They checked around and saw no traces of any break in, nor any traces of anyone around the home. They checked the door and summarized that the lock to the backdoor was iffy and it probably got pushed open by the gusting wind (upto 30kts). They demonstrated it to us. I was half convinced by their demonstration, but quickly assimilated all the inputs and made my Sherlock Holmes type brain put together and convince myself that it was indeed wind. I thanked the cops for coming and apologized for the inconvenience. they were nice enough not to mock at me. They left as quitely as they came.
Back in bedroom after locking the door, I was ready to sleep while Keerti was still not convinced it was wind. She wanted us to go back to our old apartment to sleep. LOL! I was totally baffled on how to answer that request. I just held her tight and tried convincing her. After a bit of yes no yes no talk, finally we slipped into sleep.
The first thing I did the next day is to get the locks changed. I got deadbolts installed on all the outer doors so that this incident doesnt occur again. Keerti is still not convinced but she is atleast convinced that kind of incident doesnt occur again due to wind now ;)
Boy! overall the incident was fun! hehe...

What is this blog about?
We recently bought a home (on April 8th 2010). The home was a bank owned property. The condition of the home is amazing for a bank owned property. Every appliance is at home; didnt had to get any appliances or anything. We also had every faucet in place. There were only couple of things we have to take care of sometime soon: tap in laundry hammers, door from family room to backyard is a little iffy, couple of chips on the walls and a room to paint. Other than that its all upto us to improve on it.
I am all excited to own a home and have plenty of ideas that include doing most of them myself. Do-It-Yourself is the new mantra at home now. My ideas include gardening, orgranizers in the garage, painting the rooms myself. Challenge: I have no clue/no tools yet to do anything. Beg, borrow steal is what I can say for now. LOL!
This blog is about the interesting things we did and happened in the home. Any ideas are most welcome and hope this would be interactive to those new home buyes in the same boat.
